Women20 Summit 2018 – Communiqué finalized

Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 1 – 3 October 2018

Women20 (W20) is an official engagement group of the G20 formed by a transnational network of women leaders from civil society organisations, the business sector, entrepreneurs and think tanks. Its objective is to influence decision-making groups of the G20 to carry out policies towards gender equality, and to meet the goal of advocating for more prosperous and inclusive societies. Each engagement group hosts their own summit before the G20 summit to hand over policy recommendations to the current G20 President.

The W20 Summit took place in Buenos Aires, on 1 – 3 October 2018 at the Centro Cultural Nestor Kirchner. Among 500 representatives from civil society organisations, corporations, as well as entrepreneurs and academics from countries of the G20 participated at the event.

The summit procedures were launched with a session on 1st of October, supporters of the W20 process, such as the Emerging Market Sustainability Dialogues (EMSD), could share their perspective on the W20 Communiqué with the W20 Delegates.

This discussion included the presence of Juliana Awada, the Argentinian First Lady. During the session each organization presented their stance. From EMSD, Diego Angelino highlighted the positive results on the four strategic areas, and the necessity to increase the coordination among engagement groups .

During the following days on October 2nd and 3rd the public sessions of the Summit took place. The two-day event included expert panels on the four focus topics of W20 Argentina: (1) future of work and labour market inclusion, (2) rural inclusion and development, (3) financial inclusion, and (4) digital inclusion. Among the institutions represented were UN Women, IDB, Coca Cola, Article 19, Google, DirectTV, EY,and the OECD.

The event also included presentations of global experts on gender issues as the Philosopher Ivan Jablonka, or leaders like Evelin Cabrera from the Women Football Association and even a live connection with the Queen of Holland.

The most important moment of the event was when the President of Argentina and current G20 President, Mauricio Macri, received from Susana Balbo, W20 Chair, the Communiqué with the recommendations for the heads of State of the G20.

Going forward the next step will be the G20 summit with all the heads of State of the member countries and the preparation of the Japanese presidency, were the W20 already defined that they will address the same topics but with the inclusion of governance as a cross cutting issue.
