T20 Task Force on Forced Migration Kick-off in Berlin

On 30 November, EPF co-organized the kick-off workshop of the T20 (Think20) Task Force on Forced Migration (TFFM) which took up its mission under the German G20 Presidency in Berlin. TFFM’s goal is to propose innovative, dispassionate and evidence-based policy options to policy makers of the G20 and beyond. The options to be presented are to reflect the diversity of the G20/T20, and take into consideration the needs of both G20 countries and non-G20 countries alike in the spirit of providing global solutions to global challenges. The proposals are to be ideally reflected in official G20 communiqués and result in concrete implementation in G20 countries, non-G20 countries and in other global processes. TFFM is co-chaired by representatives of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), The Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV), and GIZ/EMSD/EPF.t20-logo

Under the overarching theme “Economic Policy Solutions for the Refugee Crisis in Neighboring Countries of First Asylum” around 20 delegates from leading international think tanks built the discussion on precedent G20 communiqués emphasizing that the “G20 will continue to address forced displacement” and strengthen “the contribution of development assistance to host communities”. The workshop focused on challenges and practical solutions related to the economic integration of forcibly displaced persons in countries of first asylum as well as the role of financing and development cooperation in supporting these countries.

Participants defined the TFFM’s priorities and set up sub-groups. During the upcoming weeks, these sub-groups will jointly elaborate policy briefs on how to improve the economic integration of forced migrants in host countries by focusing on the following issues, under the agreed assumption that improving the economic situation of migrants is a global concern:

  • Education and skills development
  • Labor market integration: employment, job matching and entrepreneurship
  • Burden sharing: robust funding for refugee livelihoods
  • Reforming Institutions
  • Climate-induced migration
