In preparation for the G20 presidency in 2016, the Renmin University for the third time hosted the G20 Think Tank Summit from July 30 to August 1 in Beijing. Organized by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY), and with Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) as co-organizers, the conference intended to gauge voices and expectations from G20 countries on the upcoming Chinese G20 Presidency, under the overarching theme of “Global Governance and Open Economy.” Members of the Economic Policy Forum (EPF), and GIZ in its secretariat role for EPF supported and participated in the event as a close partner of the RDCY.

EPF supports the official G20 engagement group of think tanks (T20) for the first time. Having developed a number of proposals and recommendations on incorporating issues of innovation and technology diffusion for green growth into the G20 agenda in May 2015, supporting TEPAV in its role as G20 coordinator of the Turkish Presidency , these issues were again highlighted and became central in the discussions in Beijing especially in the context of the future implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and a new climate agreement. All 200 participants of the conference agreed that the G20 has a central role to play in supporting these UN processes.

The Chongyang Institute is a young but already well-established think tank in Beijing and member of the EPF since April 2015. The institute wants to assume the role as G20/T20 coordinator for China next year. According to its executive director Mr. Wen Wang, the EPF is already an important partner in undertaking this task, especially so as international expectations on China to seize the opportunity of the G20 Presidency to take on a more active role as responsible global leader, and making G20 more efficient as a forum that addresses the pressing challenges of global economic and financial governance and develops mechanisms for the prevention of future economic crises.

joint statement by the delegates summarized the inputs and recommendations for G20 under this year’s Turkish and next year’s Chinese presidencies.
