Mobilizing Capital for the SDGs – Sustainable Stock Exchanges Workshop in Berlin

The Emerging Market Sustainability Dialogues (EMSD) and its network the Emerging Markets Dialogue on Finance (EMDF) co-hosted a back-to-back technical workshop together with the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSE) on September 27th, 2017 at the GIZ representation in Berlin.

Adjacent to the PRI in person conference, more than 30 representatives from stock exchanges, institutional investors, companies, and securities regulators from emerging and industrialized economies attended the roundtable.

The discussions focused on how to enhance corporate transparency on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria to build long-term markets as well as how to drive capital towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aim of the workshop was to identify practical solutions to challenges that require multi-stakeholder efforts.

Key outcomes of the discussions included:

  • Given multiple ESG reporting frameworks, there is a need to harmonise standards
  • Key to improve global reporting on ESG criteriais the inclusion of ESG topics into mandatory listings requirements of stock exchanges
  • Social issuesparticularly labour rights, need to be addressed more holistically
  • The intention of SSE members and institutions present to work closer together with regulators

Many of the insitutions present will also join follow—up discussions at the UN SSE Green Finance Dialogue in Bonn, Germany for COP23.

EMDF is a member of the SSE’s Green Finance Advisory Group working on the role of stock exchanges in Green Finance and supported the SSE’s 2017 report “How stock exchanges can advance gender equality”.
